Therapist Portraits

Your portrait is your first session

When someone is searching for a therapist, they're not just evaluating your credentials. They’re scanning for something more personal and immediate: a sense that they’ll feel comfortable with you, that they won’t feel judged, that there may be a genuine fit.

Most professional portraits communicate confidence and authority. That works for lawyers, consultants, and realtors. But for therapists, those signals can create distance. Your portrait needs to do something different: not impress, but connect.

I specialize in helping therapists create portraits that communicate exactly that.

Why your portrait matters more than you think

Most therapists don't spend much time thinking about their portraits. You put something professional up and you move on. But here's what's worth considering: potential clients will scroll through dozens of listings before reaching out to anyone.

They're responding to something more subtle than credentials. A sense of fit. A feeling that this particular person might understand them. That happens in a few seconds or less, and your portrait is driving it.

The most effective therapist portraits aren't necessarily the most flattering ones: they're the ones that feel most authentic, that capture your professional presence as part of who you are. Real presence reads differently than a polished smile. And for someone working up the courage to reach out for help, that difference matters.

Why I approach this differently

I spent many years as a consumer insights researcher at Fortune 50 companies, studying how people make purchases. That background shapes how I think about professional portraits: not just how they look, but how they land with the potential clients who see them.

Most people hate having their photo taken. Therapists especially. You spend your days creating space for others. Being on the other side of that can feel a little strange.

Sessions with me are collaborative and conversational. I'm not directing you into stiff poses or telling you exactly what expression to make, which is how you get the "I'm having my picture taken" look rather than genuine presence. Instead we talk, we try things, you see images as we go. You have real agency throughout. Most people tell me afterward that it felt nothing like they expected.

The goal isn't a “perfect” headshot. It's a portrait that actually comes across as you.
